Brokerage firm with "best" Quicken integration

This is, after all, a Quicken newsgroup.

I transferred my Merrill Lynch accounts last year. Merrill had terrible integration with Quicken, and I finally got tired of promises to support Direct Connect "soon." I understand that Direct Connect IS available now, but I'm not going back.

I also closed my Morgan Stanley accounts. Quicken integration was better, but I still got the feeling that "independent" investing was not encouraged.

Fidelity was better, but account info is not updated till late at night, not in "real-time."

I don't have any Vanguard accounts, but my understanding is that Vanguard also updates at night, and not in "real-time."

I've found Charles Schwab's real-time updating, and Direct Connect support to fit my purposes best. $9.95 for unlimited shares per trade is not exorbitant in my book. I don't trade much anyway, so Schwab's web site meltdown on Thursday did not impact me.

It WAS unsettling, though, to have Quicken return error messages for my primary broker. That "glitch" during a minor turmoil does NOT inspire confidence.

I WOULD be VERY interested in hearing if anyone had problems with Schwab in '87, '98, or '00-'02.

I would also be interested in whether other brokerage firms offer Direct Connect real-time updates.

Thanks, Bob

E*Trade Financial has direct connect with Quicken. E*Trade Bank is Web connect only.

Oppenheimer supports direct connect with Quicken.

I don't know if either are real time as I only update in the evening.

Look at the Financial Institution list within Quicken. It will tell you what connect methods are supported.

John:

Thanks for the reply. The problem with the FI list is that I can't tell if Direct Connect is "real-time" or not.

I have used Schwab (and Quicken) since 1987 but don't recall that they ever had real-time account updating. In the beginning, a trade was recorded into my account sometime after midnight. The last time I looked, a trade was recorded by about 8pm and appeared on my Quicken Update at that time. Perhaps they are updating in real time now. For me, real time account updating is not that important. If I really need to, I can update Quicken manually and let my early morning update provide the actual results. Note: I don't trade more than 12 times a year.

However, real-time stock quotes are important but the service Quicken uses (Comstock) delays quotes at least 20 minutes and sometimes by several hours. I don't think you will ever see real time stock quotes with Quicken unless Intuit figures out how they could charge you for a real time quote service.

I have CS too. I have compared the CS website with the info in my Q file. The only time they will match is after 8pm or 9pm so I don't think they have realtime updating these days.

If I need real time info, then I go to the website. Not a big issue.

None of them properly translate their transaction types to Quicken's transaction times. If you care about your data being correct all of them will cause you headaches.

Arnie & Laura:

I should have been more precise.

By "real-time" I was referring to transfers into and out of the checking portion of my Schwab One accounts.

I don't trade individual stocks, only ETFs, index and bond funds.

If Jim "Mad Money" Cramer can't beat the market, I know I sure can't :-)

I've also been sitting on my hands lately, but I'm pretty sure that when I bought and sold ETFs, my cash position changes were "immediately" downloadable into Quicken.
