Tried to install Quicken in Ubuntu Linux using Wine.  I am getting
errors when I open it.  The starting window that asks if you are new
or do you have file to work with just keeps flashing on and off.  Any
suggestions?  TIA

Re: Linux

What version of Quicken are you using?  I'll attach my (from my
experience) instructions for installing Quicken H&B 2007, which is
working reasonably well for me (I don't do any downloads from my
financial institution, so no idea if that would work)....

FWIW - I'm running Linux Mint 10 (more or less Ubuntu 11.04) with Wine
1.3.31.  I do find that things tend to change over time - i.e., some
tweaks that I do for one release of Linux or of Wine may not work the
same way for the next release.  You might want to consider buying a copy
of Crossover Linux, which has tweaks to support Quicken built-in.

==========================================================================
Wine - Install latest Wine 1.3 via synaptic
=========================================================================

Add Wine development repository via Synaptic
  - Go to Settings --> Repositories "Other Software" tab --> hit "Add"
  - Add Apt line:  ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa

Install wine1.3, wine1.3-gecko, winetricks,
ttf-symbol-replacement-wine1.3, gnome-exe-thumbnailer

=======================================================
Configure Wine via Winetricks
=======================================================

Use Winetricks (winprefix menu option) to install
  - Tahoma
  - corefonts
  - IE (IE6 seems to work best - IE7 may be OK - IE8 has initialization
failures)

Check properties of an .exe file - make sure associated with Wine
program loader

=========================================================================
Install Quicken
=========================================================================

Skip the R5 update - sometimes it fails, sometimes it works, sometimes
Quicken won't start after the  update

(2011-08-06 - R5 update worked this time, with Wine 1.3.25, IE6, online
update)

To disable registration prompt

    1. Hold the CTRL + SHIFT key.
    2. Click on the Online menu on the top menu bar, then select One
Step Update.
    3. Click OK. You will no longer be prompted for registration.

FYI - You may need to fix the launcher / Gnome menu to read something
like... wine "/home/<director>/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Quicken/qw.exe"

Thanks for the reply.

Why would I want to install IE??

Re: Linux

Because there are places inside of Quicken where it pops up a web
browser - and that web browser is a programmatically called version of
IE. Yep, Quicken is hard-wired for IE, sorry to say.

Now, if you've got that browser window up, and you click on the "Full
Browser" button, then you get the default browser du jour as recognized
by whatever OS you're running.

I'm pretty sure that's how it works on Windows because, well, it's
pretty obvious. I've never seen how it works on the MAC OS's, but I'm
pretty sure IE is available on the MAC, albeit an old, decrepit version
no doubt.

Re: Linux

Just a FYI (I'm not the original poster).  I'm using Quicken Deluxe
2009 with wine under Ubuntu 10.10 following Rob's instructions without
major issue.

I don't think I installed anything from winetricks.  The default
Ubuntu installation seemed to already include the fonts, etc.

I don't think I installed any version of IE either.

Wine does display a number of messages about unimplemented functions.
These seem to be harmless.  Examples include:

    fixme:ole:TLB_ReadTypeLib Header type magic 0x00905a4d not supported.
    err:ole:TLB_ReadTypeLib Loading of typelib L"C:\Program
Files\Quicken\QWUTIL.dll" failed with error 0
    err:ole:TLB_ReadTypeLib Loading of typelib L"C:\Program
Files\Quicken\QWUTIL.tlb" failed with error 2
    fixme:xrender:XRender_AlphaBlend Unable to AlphaBlend without Xrender

I do download from several Financial Institutions with both Direct
Connect and Web Connect.  This works fine.

There are various dialog boxes which use fonts of the wrong size
and/or character set.  At least one place I seldom go (edit bill
reminder?) seems to use a character set for a language I don't
recognize for some help text.  I think I did try various winetricks to
solve this problem without seeing any change in behavior.  Knowing how
Windows quicken works helps for these places.

I have tried using X forwarding (in ssh) for the wine/quicken output.
This works okay when I'm local to the remote system but doesn't work
very well when I'm traveling.

I've recently tried running wine/quicken inside a VNC session.  This
seems to work better for remote access.  Some of the Quicken Icons
don't get displayed (one step update drop down next to "Accounts" in
the left sidebar and icons showing pending transactions in the left
sidebar).

Quicken requires a bigger display than I have on my Netbook and some
dialog boxes end up too tall for the display (I assume this is also an
issues for Windows Netbooks).  With VNC I can use a larger virtual
screen and scroll the display.

I have tried updating to Quicken 2012 and ran into problems.  So far I
haven't resolved them and and remaining with 2009 for now.  After my
next trip I will probably try again (including updating Ubuntu and
Wine if necessary).

I'm glad I now don't need to dual boot into windows just to run
quicken.  I'm also glad to be able to leave quicken on a home server
instead of carrying it around on a laptop when I travel.
