Vanguard 9/10/14 - new downloading

9/10/14 - my Quicken download from Vanguard failed -

I couldn't grab the text error message from Vanguard, but for Quicken users - 9/10 - they are upgrading their system -

You will need to DE-activate and then RE-activate your accounts to connect with Vanguard.... for downloaded.

Yep - this bit me too a couple of days ago. Thanks for the heads up ps56k so that I know it wasn't on my end.

My Vanguard account 'financial institution' name as recorded in Q also seems to have be changed to 'zzz-Vanguard' from what I assumed used to be 'Vanguard'. I tried deactivating one of my accounts and reactivating (I noticed you had to enter an account number into the panel now as opposed to just Vanguard return all of them in a pick-list.) but that didn't work.

Don't have time right now to do ALL of them, so I'll try later tonight.

The first thing that needs to happen is to download a new "fidir.txt" file - one that has Vanguard's new financial institution name ("Vanguard") in it.

In Quicken you need to de-activate every Vanguard account.

When you have the new fidir.txt file, you can re-activate your Vanguard accounts using the new Vanguard financial institution name.

To re-activate and get the opportunity to use the new Vanguard financial institution name, use the "Add an Account" button (below Account Bar or in Account List). If you don't see the new name ("Vanguard"), try manually keying it. If you still don't get it, you don't have the latest fidir.txt file.

When your data downloads using the new Vanguard name, make sure you "Link" each downloaded account to the correct existing Quicken account.

See the instructions at the Vanguard web site - you can key "quicken" in the "SEARCH" box at the top of the Vanguard web page, then select choice #1, to find those instructions.

I'm going to follow these Vanguard suggested steps, and see what works - and where something is broken or missing -

I got the message yesterday and downloaded the installation instructions, then stepped through them for 5 accounts and had it done in about 15 minutes. Biggest problem was forgetting the account number and had to start over. But other then that no problems

YUP - works like a charm - Had one brokerage acct with several funds, and my son's Roth IRA with just one fund.

I did a "reconcile" at the end on each account just to make sure nothing snuck into the register.

done and done -

Hi John - Long time, no hear.

Regarding the fidir.txt' download you mentioned as the first thing to do. I presume Q does this automatically 'somehow'. I don't have this particular file on my computer, nor do I ever remember seeing it, nor did I go out of my way to get a new one. But I did do the procedure that Vanguard sent to me both as an email as well as online during a OSU, and it worked fine.

It's too bad they informed me in both cases AFTER the original d/l failure the day or two before. If they had, the d/l failure would not have been unexpected with subsequent anxiety it caused me.

(I do note that both 'zzz-Vanguard' and 'Vanguard' were BOTH in my list of potential FIs when I typed in 'Vang' to 'find' the FI name after clearing out the 'zzz-Vanguard' as the FI in my Q file as their instructions indicated to do so.)

I'll wager you do have that file on your pc.

The file may be in different locations depending on your operating system.

In my Windows 7 system (for my Q2013 application), fidir.txt is located at:

user/all users/intuit/quicken/inet/common/localweb/banklist/2013

And, yes, fidir.txt is normally updated automatically ... about every 48 hours ... when you do a One Step Update.

But In this situation, you needed to insure that Quicken did update that file ... in order to get "Vanguard" as a valid financial institution. Prior to this change, "Vanguard" was not a valid fi - and "Vanguard Group" was a valid fi. Now, the opposite is true.

I happen to watch the One Step Update just for that reason, and for EACH of the various bank, brokerage, etc accounts, the sequence of the status message line item was.....

- Updating Financial Institution Information

- Sending Online Instructions (the downloaded data)
