1040X 2011 --IRS says they don't have it

OK, last month I received a corrected 1099 for tax year 2011 (thanks a lot!). Anyway, the correction was in my favor, resulting in a refund of about $120. It didn't take long to do a quick 1040X and send it in (State and Federal). I got my small State refund last week.

When I checked on the "Where's my Amended Return" site, the response was they had no record of such a filing. I think I mailed it 4 weeks ago.

Should I just wait? The site says if it's been more than 3 weeks, contact them, but the contacts seem to not apply to amended returns.

Last time I checked IRS link, it said 8-12 weeks for amended return, not

3 weeks.

Actually, the IRS says it will be in their system/records within 3 weeks. It will take 8-12 weeks to issue the refund, after they have received the return.

But this is getting frustrating. I sent it in about 4-5 weeks ago. Every time I check, the automated response is that they have no record of my

1040X return. They then say it takes 3 weeks from the time I mailed it. They then disconnect. They do not tell you what to do if it is after that 3-week mark.

Any suggestions on how to proceed? This is for a 2011 return, so my absolute deadline is April 15th. I can re-send the forms if needed.

Just bumping this. I still don't know how to follow up.

There must be a telephone number where I can get a live person!

(Maybe just go into my local IRS office, which is 30 miles away!)

Contact your representatives in Congress about why they think cutting the IRS budget is a good idea.

I might just have to go to my local IRS office. From what I've read, these local yokels are not exactly helpful.

This is really a procedural issue.

Guess I'll also bring my 1099X forms and maybe they can just re-file it.

But then I'll probably get the refund twice and still have a mess!

I know this is a minor thing. It is only $100+ . Still...

Current year refunds come first, so they don't go past June 30 where they have to pay interest on timely filed returns. They have to pay interest regardless on your 2011 claim, so a small delay is considered "acceptable." After that, they then process all the taxables where a balance is owed.

For your amended, they don't know if it's a refund or balance due until they get to it. That's why you're in the middle category. They'll probably deal with it about May.
