1095-A Problems

I am doing my taxes with H&RBlock software. I got my health insurance through a marketplace and don't qualify for a subsidy.

H&R demands that I enter my 1095-A forms and then says it can't calculate my subsidy because Part III column B is all zero. It now will not allow me to file taxes until that is fixed.

I suppose they have a point, it can't calculate the subsidy without information my insurance company seems to have left out, but since I won't qualify for a subsidy anyhow, that seems to be irrelevant.

I can get around this all by just tell H&R that I didn't buy insurance through the marketplace. Otherwise I would have to figure out the correct column B numbers and I then I would be contradicting the 1095-A data.

Any downside to telling H&R that I have the required Health Insurance, but didn't get it through the marketplace?

I have not seen any 1095-A forms that had anything other than zero in that column. Go to healthcare.gov and use their tool to find "Monthly Premium Amount of Second Lowest Cost Silver Plan (SLCSP)" for your zipcode and age. This is on the first page you see and you don't log in. Use that data with the software.

That referred me to the NYS Health Department, which wasn't as cooperative. But when I searched on SLCSP it coughed it up.

H&RBLock says I have to wait to file for an update because they can't handle two 1095As. But I am making progress. Thanks.

The guvment admitted that about 800,000 1095-A forms were issued in error and they are sending out replacements this week. These forms will (supposedly) agree with going on the web site and selecting the "Second Lowest Cost Silver"

I just logged "Your Form 1095-A is ready. There were issues with the "monthly premium amount of the second lowest cost silver plan" on some people's forms, but yours wasn't affected. You can use your current form to fill out your taxes."

My 1095-A forms are not correct, having 0.00 in SLCSP column.

My opinion is that they are not on top of this, no matter what they say. I did read some where that some 1095-A forms were sent with 2015 SLCSP. I suspect this is the error they reference.

In a call to them in mid-January I was told to use the tool and no updated forms would be provided to me.

If there is a state exchange, wouldn't it be issuing the 1095-A?

Not necessarily. Reporting $0 in the SLCSP column is not an "error". It only means that you have to use the online tool to find what the SLCSP is for your set of circumstances.

The Minnesota Exchange issued some 1095-A forms with nothing in the SLCSP column. The letter they sent with the 1095-A included a FAQ that told you how to look up the applicable SLCSP needed when filing your tax return. Apparently there are circumstances when an exchange is not required to inform you about the SLCSP.

Got the H&R Block update promised on 3/26/15 and essentially, they tell me to see an 'H&R Block Professional' and then offered to help me locate one in my area.

Pretty cheesy update after waiting almost a month for it. It doesn't seem to want to calculate the SEHI deduction either.
