Career Counseling Deduction For Dependent ?

Hello,

My son has been out of work for a long time now, and I take him as a Dependent on my 1040 return.

I provide free room and board, pay for his medical insurance, and just about everything. He has no income himself.

Question: I have also been paying for "career counseling".

Is this deductable on my return ?

If so, where would one put it ?

Thanks, R.

No.

========== Not so fast. If it could be considered a "job search" expense, that category is deductible. It depends on what they mean as "career counseling." If they're doing things like helping him with a resume, arranging job interviews, etc., it may count. Usually, it doesn't.

I agree, it MIGHT constitute a "job search" expense (additional fact gathering would be in order). In that case it MIGHT be deductible by the son (the job seeker). But I don't think it would be deductible by the father (the support provider) in any event.

That was my point exactly.
