Filing son's taxes 1040EZ, my 1040 rejected because he claimed an exemption?

My sons filed their taxes on 1040-EZ using HR-Block online tax software. Simple summer job, but now when I try and E-File my taxes they are saying THEY claimed an exemption of their taxes, so I can't claim one.

I am looking at the 1040EZ they filed and they DID check box 5 which says someone else is claiming them as an exemption.

What am I missing here? How did they file this wrong I don't see any other place where you can say you don't want to claim any exemption.

Also, if (I guess) I have to have them file an amended return there is NO way I can E-File, right?

It's hard to tell what might have gone wrong. Did they e-file or file by mail? If they e-filed, are you sure they checked the box on line 5 *before* they transmitted their returns, and not after. People sometimes mistakenly think that if they make a correction online after they have e-filed, the tax return that is sent to the IRS will include the change.

Yes, they have to file amended returns, assuming that you can legitimately claim them as dependents.

That's right. You have to file by mail, even if your sons file amended returns.
