The Rule of 70 and the Rule of 72 compared

Hi,

Search Google for these two smightly different versions of these popular rules of thumb and you get the following:

Rule of 72 - 25,000,000 hits

Rule of 70 - 41,700,000 hits

The former is mainly used in the world of finance, and the latter in population dynamics, population ecology, demography and so on.

I've written an article that compares the two:

That's funny. When I google, "rule of 70" gets only 961 hits and "rule of 72" gets 572,000. You must remember to put quotes around the phrase, otherwise a hit will result from any document Google knows about which contains the words "rule", "of", and "7?", as opposed to the phrase "rule of 7?".

Here, we more often hear of the rule of 78.
