It is worth a shot. I would suggest that you copy the installation files from the USB to the hard drive and do the install off of the hard drive instead.

BTW, I know of several people that have gotten QB2004 and QB2005 to work on their Vista machines. They just run it in XP compatible mode.

By now you have had time to try this. Why not report your results here?

Thanks

I can not think of any reason why installing from a USB key would not work.

I've never heard of installing softward copied to a USB drive. It sure as heck *might* work (and no loss if it doesn't) -- but I suspect a Windows XP group would be able to help you with that.

Why not just install QB 2008 on the Vista machine?

Another suggestion or two:

  1. Replace the broken CD drive. About .00.
  2. Remove the CD drive from the Vista machine and temporarily install it in the XP machine.

And, are you sure the QB 2008 disk is a CD? It might be a DVD.

Why not just convert the qb05 file to qb08 format on the Vista machine? When you open the file on the vista machine QB will automatically convert it. Make a backup copy so that you can keep the file in the old QB05 format.

Just remember that once you conver the file to the 2008 format you can NOT open it using 2005. You can have both programs installed on your machine at the same time. Just specify the year version in the path name when you do the installation.

???

Just open a copy of the 2005 file using QB 2008. QB should do all the conversion for you.
