I expect to have some capital losses this year. Obviously no one here is psychic, but is there any reason to think they can't be carried over, or should I take some gains to be on the safe side?

I would say the chances of this happening are near zero. There are people who lost quite a bit in the dotcom bubble who are still taking those losses against gains plus $3000/yr and still have decades, if not hundreds of years of carry-forward ahead of them. (Obviously, those people aren't the reason, it's that I've heard no talk at all of this being discussed)
