Filing Amending Tax Returns Son in Military

My 19 year old son filed himself as an exemption in error. He joined the military 9/13. This was his only income, so my wife and I can still claim him. He will file amended returns removing exemption. Question is, does he attach a amended 1040 with the 1040X to the IRS or just send the 1040X? And to California he will send the 540X and Amended 540NR with CA Schedule as it is required (he is stationed in Texas but CA Resident), Does he send the 1040X or Amended 1040 with attachment to the Franchise Tax Board? They require a copy of the Federal Return. Thanks for your help.

That's probably wrong, unless he was in high school for the first five months of the year.

If he was not under age 19, not a full time student, and presumably had over $3,900 gross income for the year, you cannot claim him as a dependent.
