Filing status different for Federal return and State return

Can I use a different filing status for Federal and State? I got married in October last year, but I and my wife were residing in separate states (PA and MA, resp)till early

2007. So, on Dec 31st we were married but did not stay together. For the state I guess we cannot file JOINT because of different states (but I am not sure). Now, in that case can we file the Federal taxes jointly? Thanks

Some states require that you use the same filing status as Federal, some don't. All states have ways of dealing with couples in which only one spouse is a resident. You have to look at the states' instructions, figure out your options, then compare the overall effect of all options. Either file for extensions or plan on spending most of this weekend on this.
