Hi, Dick. I normally read all my Usenet groups in my mail browser, but for something special like this I switch to Google. Here are the steps for a WindowsXP system (don't know about Mac's):

  1. Do whatever you need to do to see the poster's email address; in this case it was snipped-for-privacy@spamexpire-200711.rodent.frell.theremailer.net which I copied to my clipboard (right click then 'copy email address').
  2. Open Google Groups --

Next to the "Search Groups" button, click on "AdvancedGroup Search"
  3. On the 'Advanced Search' page, go to the field for "Group" and enter the Usenet group of interest; in this instance, rec.crafts.brewing or maybe alt.homebrewing or whatever (can't remember what I used)
  4. In the "Author" field, paste the email address from the clipboard; if that doesn't work, copy the subject line from the Usenet post and paste it in the "Subject" field of the Google search page, or enter some key words from the post, or whatever it takes to get Google to display the _thread_; if necessary, post a reply in the Usenet thread with something unique to help you use Google to find your own reply.
  5. If there are a lot of threads generated by the search, you'll need to find a way to limit them or be patient to go through all of them.
  6. Once you have the thread, go to the message that is suspect; in this case it was the top message in the thread.
  7. Next to the name of the author of that message is a "View Profile" link; that's it -- click it. Even if the person has not created a profile, as was the case here, at least Google will show the activity of that particular person (or email address). I don't know if this _ALWAYS_ works because I haven't done it much. I also will often do 'WhoIs' searches of suspect domains for some insight. Hope that helps. Cheers.
