special dividend given as stocks

Mar 06, 2007 1 Replies

I would appreciate any information on the following situation. I have owned shares of a company for 10 years. In the past 5 years, the company has paid quarterly dividends, along with a special yearly dividend of company stock. My question is: I have sold all shares, and would like to know how to incorporate the special dividend when I figure out the capital gain on this stock. Thank you for your time.

Not exactly sure what you are referring to as a special dividend. I'll speculate that it may be a stock dividend. That is a dividend only paid in shares of stock. If that is the case, you have to adjust your basis accordingly. Your CPA/tax advisor should be able to help you with these calcualtions. ___________________________________
