I changed jobs last year. I recently (late) received my w-2's from my previous employer. I found that there was an extra amount of income reported than I actually received in the amount of one paycheck.
The first check I received in 2008 was actually for the second pay period in December of 2007. The employer was counting this as 2008 income because it was paid in 2008.
I don't think this is allowed, is it? I mean, don't you owe/pay taxes during the year in which the work was actually conducted?
I can't seem to find the tax code to reference to find this answer. I want to be able to tell the employer to reissue W-2's that reflect the actual pay/tax during 2008.
Please help!
