TaxCut Online: Married Filing Jointly/Seperately

I have prepared my 2006 US tax return using the on-line H&R Block Tax- Cut program. I thought that, having entered the information, it would tell me whether my wife and I should file jointly or seperately. Instead it just lets me file it jointly and then says that I must file another for my wife if I want to file it seperately. It seems like, since it has all the information, it should be able to tell me which is better. It seems to me that I may as well just do it both ways manually and maybe take it to an accountant. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Peter

Some software does that with the click of a button. This if the income, deductions and credits are all assigned to either the taxpayer, spouse, or jointly as appropriate. Consider looking for that option for next years returns if it's important to you.

You might want to try using TaxAct. It has a menu item called "Compare Filing Joint-versus-Separate." You click it, and it does an instant comparision for you in a printable report. It includes a check box that you can tick if you live in a community property state so that can be taken into account. I'm not a tax pro. Just a happy user of TaxAct.

Many thanks for the suggestion. Next year, I will certainly choose TaxAct over TaxCut. Peter.
