No, they have correctly informed you that Scots banknotes are not "legal tender". That does not mean they are not "legal", whatever that might mean.

It seems to me that the difference between "you can be arrested" and "you can't be arrested" is more than just pedantic.

The difference between "legal" and "legal tender" is no more pedantic than the difference between "orange" and "orange squash". Or the difference between calling you a "wit" and a "f****it".
