Why **couldn't** the UK leave the EU?

Name them, and the countries they apply to

But isn't that preferable to being in and having to do what they tell us whether we wish to trade with them or not, and having to pay them for the privilege?

Not for business to business trades

No its not.

1 USD = approximately 0.7 Euros

So that's no tariff wall then

such as?

Nearer 20%

Or more to the point you made up a statement that can't be supported by any facts.

Keeping Chinese beasts and meat out of the EU is a VERY good idea

Would the WTO allow it?

Why do you believe we would have fewer export markets? The proposal is that we withdraw from the EU, not that we stop trading with it.

Regarding the second reason there's nothing to stop us withdrawing from the EU while keeping any EU laws parliament considers beneficial to us.

According to Wikipedia the EU has free trade agreements with

27 non EU countries. Apart from Monaco, the Vatican and some former SSRs, all countries in Europe are either part of the EU or have free trade agreements with it.

Yes of course it could: -

Er common sense perhaps.

Well let me see

  1. There are all those irrevocable treaties that were entered into after the referendum (you know what you have when you intend to make constitutional change that can't easily be reversed). We could abrogate them, but that would do wonders for the UK's future reputation. Even Stalin stuck to his foreign treaties.

  1. No doubt tarrif barriers would be erected. Reliant as the UK is on trade and operating the worlds largest financial market this could be seen as self harm.

  2. Then there would be all the hassle of customs, carnets, cartes de sejour, visas etc.

  1. Most big players from the rest of the world would almost immediately move their HQ's from the UK into the EU. Indeed many of the big players in the UK would shift to the EU. Then they would move the factories too.

I suppose we could impose our own fishing quotas and go back to imperial units, the milk / potato marketing boards, British Lion eggs, put up the price of wine and lower the price of beer.

So pull up the drawbridge and settle in for a long siege.

No - have a look at the prices at MacDonalds in Norway...

ok...however, they will still charge you the 20% vat if they get the chance...eg via shopping in monaco, andorra etc

I think Norway do contribute to the EU budget albeit at a lesser rate than they would if they were a member. The EU has some political control over Norway but less than it has over the UK. The trade off is that we have far more influence over the EU than Norway does. EU membership fees are a small % of total UK government spending.

Do our MPs personally profit from our membership of the EU and if so, how?

Don't goods sold in the EU get charged VAT regardless of country of origin?

Wasn't that the EEC?

Maybe Stalin stuck to his foreign treaties but Cameron never signed a treaty committing the UK to EU membership....

Why do you assume tarrif barriers would be erected?

True.

Straw man.
