Does anyone have an idea where the line item number found under Sales Order Entry is physically located?

Select Order > Lines Tab >
Individual Line numbers are displayed in the Line column on the Sales Order Entry form. Are these stored in the data table structure or are they generated 'on the fly' during each session upon encountering either an EOL char or after each Extension entry? If they are static, has anyone tried accessing or exporting them, using either flat file or ODBC methods?
