Better Label Designer...

Does anybody know of an add-on which would enable better control and design capabilities for labels?

e.g. rotating text

The only label add-in that I know of is RITE Label - try google searching for it - I don't remember the URL... I believe it was more about selecting the labels to be printed than about formatting,but youmay want to check it out.

Some printers can be used with text based drivers and printer control languages. For example, Zebra printers can use a language called EPL (See the label file ELTRON.lbl installed by RMS for a sample). You can download a programmers guide for EPL from the Zebra web site and yes it allows text rotation;

If you want to rotate ALL of the fields on a label, just switch from Landscape to Portrait in the Label Designer.

Most printer manufacturers have some sort of downloadable label design software. In most cases, you will have to pay for a version that can connect to a database. I believe Avery has one, but it would be designed for their labels and a laser printer rather than a dedicated label printer.

thanks for the input Glen, i will investigate. Seems like such a shame RMS doesnt include a more flexible design setup. I wanted to rotate some database feilds for the side of labels etc... so potrait/landscape doesnt do the trick.

thanks again!

The first label I ever designed for RMS (really a clothing tag) needed the price rotated 90 degrees to fit in a tear off section. My solution for this was to get the EPL Programmers guide form Zebra's website and switch from Windows to Generic/Text print drivers. The graphic designer is easier to use obviously, but the EPL Languange gives you much more control over the output. One I had the programmers guide, I never saw much point in switching back; labels don't really change that often once you have them the way you want, so WYSIWG is more of a nice to have than a necessity IMO.

Maybe version 3....what I'd like to see is a better "print designer" or "document editor" or "reports editor"; where you can select different templates and then do adding/deleting/editing of the many different fields available in the database, like a tag designer, a receipt designer for both

40 column and letter size, a PO designer for both PO's and receiv> Does anybody know of an add-on which would enable better control and design

Hi Philip

We have issues all the time with the built in, but have created many different lables for customers. I would try bartender, it is good for creating lables.
