Accidentally underreporting estimated taxes?

Say you pay $10k in estimated taxes, but on your tax return you only report $8k. Will IRS automatically catch this and correct it? Or are you completely responsible for adding up all your estimated tax payments correctly?

The IRS often catches this sort of mistake and automatically corrects it. But they could miss it.

so why not add the corrected estimated amount to the amended return?

My experience is that they do a very good job of catching these errors (either up or down) and automatically adjusting the refund or amount owed.
