Another Tax Rebate Question

Hmmm, $300 per child. I assume the IRS will go by last year's tax forms. So, how will this be figured for a divorced couple when for tax year 2006 the non-custodial parent claims the children for tax purposes (child tax credit, et cetera - with signed 8332) and the custodial parent used the children to claim HH status and EIC?

It's supposed to be based on 2007 return data, and it seems they'll look at where the kids name and SSN appear as "dependent". So one parent claims the child (and gets the $300) while the other may be taking HOH, etc. and doesn't get any extra.

Divorce situation aside, will the $300 rebate apply to qualifying _adult_ dependent children?

How would they know which dependents are adults? Date of birth is not on the tax return. Does the IRS match to the Social Security database to get the age of dependents?

I have seen elsewhere that the child rebate is for children "under 17". I guess that answers my question.

Given the differences in the Senate version, the whole thing might well explode. Or, might the Dems be attempting to force a veto?
