Attending educational seminars and tax deduction

  1. I have attended a couple of educational seminars last year that are directly related to the business I am currently in, but weren't mandated by my employer. Would I be able to deduct the airfare to/from the meeting location (location is in the US), and what proof should I prepare should IRS want to take a closer look (I have airfare receipts, if that's enough).
  2. I also had to travel to visit a homeland security office in a different city. This visit was necessary for continued employment, and in fact was mandated by my employer. Is the airfare to/from the location tax-deductible? Thanks, Alex.
