can I deduct home expenses as an outside salesman?

I do not have an office to go to so I work from home. I know I can deduct my phone and traveling to appts, but can I also deduct part of my electricity, heating and mortgage expenses seeing as I work from home?

You can if you have a space that meets the IRS definition of an office in home: A place that is used "regularly" and "exclusively" for business. Most people fail the exclusive part. If your office space is also the guest room, e.g., you fail the test.

If you do have a legitimate space, you calculate the percentage of the area of the house the office comprises, and use that number to claim a percentage of your expenses for home mortgage interest, property tax, utilities, insurance, repairs/maintenance, etc. You also depreciation that portion of your home, using 39 years as the class life.

Look for an IRS publication on home office to see if you meet all of the qualifications, or ask your CPA or other tax professional. ___________________________________
