Canadian citizen in US on TN Visa

A few questions regarding a Canadian citizen in the US.

  1. Is a Social Security number required in order to work or is a TIN sufficient?

  1. If the person is in school but working part-time as an intern at a company, he or she still must have FICA and Medicare taxes withheld regardless of number of hours worked in a week, right?

Note: I have confirmed that the person has a TN visa, not a TD.

Thanks, Gary

  1. Lawful employment requires a social security number.
  2. The rule for FICA and medicare tax withholding applies to part-time as well as full-time employees.
