Canadian Tax Help

Can someone direct me to a good resource on how income taxes would be handled for a couple where one spouse lives and works in the USA and the other in Canada?

I am considering marrying my Canadian fiance and possibly having us live for a period of years in separate countries. I am pretty sure that the best way to file our USA taxes would be to treat her as a resident, file jointly, and take a tax credit for taxes she pays to Canada. But there are at least two issues I'd want to explore, and possibly others:

a) Would property taxes and interest on her home in Canada be deductible on our USA return? It would surely be considered her primary home, and presumably my second home. b) Assuming that I plan to move to Canada after I retire, how would my income from Social Security, pensions, and IRA's (separately as to traditional and Roth) be treated for Canadian and USA taxes?

These are kind of complex questions and perhaps beyond the scope of this group, so if there are no experts here on these topics, maybe reference to a good source?

andthe Canada-US Social Security Treaty Frankly, most people who delve into international taxation/cross- border taxation find it easier and cheaper to hire a tax pro familiar with both tax systems. The situation isn't simple and changes far too rapidly which is why I gave you the links rather than explain the situation NOW as it will change by THEN.

If you are looking for actual help later, I do prepare Canadian and US taxes. Generally, I do both at the same time as the returns must be in sync. Otherwise there will be questions when the CRA and IRS compare them.

Think Health Care.

Medicare does not pay for services for care outside the US (except for a few rare circumstances which don't apply to you) Fortunately most Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans cover urgent care and emergency care world wide.

20 years ago the Canadian (or at least the Province of Saskatchewan) health plan covered initial post Cardiac Incident care in Palm Springs but elected to medivac my cousin home once he stabilized. (it was presumably cheaper that the rack rate charged by Eisenhower Medical Center)
