Client came back

Last month I wrote that one of my long-time clients had decided for financial reasons he had to do his tax returns himself this year. Well, yesterday he called and made me an offer to put his return on extension and complete the return in May when I have extra time. It seems he ventured out into the jungle, looked at a software package and one of the chain preparation firms; considered his return complexity; and decided it wasn't worth taking the chance. Welcome back!

Good for him, and for you! You're sealed your place as a Value Added Service Provider with him - he WILL tell others, especially if you ASK him for referrals.

When this happens to me, I reconsider any discounts I may have been giving the client. If he left once, especially over fees, he's likely to jump again so be careful about giving away too much to this client.

This is also an excellent opportunity for you to get some recon info - what was the price quoted by the other company and why didn't he go with them? This will help guide you with your practice fees and level of service.

Remember, our clients treat us the way we TEACH THEM TO.
