An ex-brokerage sold all the partial shares before transferring the contents of my account to a new brokerage. It has sent me a 1099-B declaring the sales of partial shares as long term; I did not want that but I'm living with it. 2 problems with the Uncovered portion of the 1099-B.
- The brokerage has filled in the date acquisition column with the date I opened the brokerage account. Should I write a note about that when I send in my tax forms?
- A stock was spun off from one I've held for decades. The partial share sold is long term; however, which acquisition date do I use? The original stock acquistion date or the date of the spin off when I received the shares? If it is the latter, should I write a note to the IRS pointing out that the stock was long term because of a spin off even though the date of the spin off was less than a year before the sale?
