efile question

If one efiles one's tax return (1040 and CA 540) and wants to add explanation notes and send additional material along with the tax returns, is it possible to do so with say Turbo Tax etc?

If yes, please explain in detail how it is done.

Thank you.

I'm not familiar with TurboTax but most tax software allows you to cate and attach a .pdf file, in which you can add explanations.

Call each a statement and label them Statement 1, Statement 2, etc.

TurboTax does have a form called "General Statement" or something like that which can be filed with the return (I can't verify that it is included in the efile transmittal, but it certainly can be printed as part of the return). Many individual fields in TurboTax also support a statement of some kind.

If you are asking about attaching a PDF, you can find a wealth of info about this at the TurboTax web site. See example below.

Professional (not consumer) tax software will typically support attachment of PDFs for the years that the IRS began supporting it (only the last few, as I recall). Some professional tax software will also let you view exactly what is transmitted in the efile XML data.

Here is the reply, if you can't view the link:

"Will turbo tax allow you to attach supporting PDF documents during e-filing?

Turbotax does not have that capability.

Are you sure you need to attach them. There is no need to attach additional statements or receipts not required by the IRS, principally because they won't be read. As a general rule, don't send anything with a return that isn't required to be sent.

  • the people in the section that input returns do just that - they don't have the time to read anything that is attached, and they have nothing to do with it if they do.
  • one of the primary methods of selecting returns is by computer. Whatever you sent with the return wasn't input into the computer. Consequently, in most cases it won't increase or decrease your chances of the return being selected.
  • once selected for audit, many returns are audited based on computer prints of the return. The original return is left in the Federal Records Center, so what you attached isn't seen by the auditor.
  • you probably have a better chance of finding your receipts than the IRS does. They don't pull returns and sometimes when they do, they find out they have misfiled them.

If you feel you must add them, then you would need to file by mail, as they cannot be e-filed."
