Genrally three years from date filed or due date, whichever is later, or two years from last payment date in order to get a refund.
There are some unusual items that can be filed more than the 3 years, and still receive a refund, such as for stocks becoming worthless or for a bad debt, which is seven years.
It is 4 years years in many states.
Isn't there a rule that says you can file after more than 3 years, but the refund is limited by some complicated rules?
And specifically, your state may vary. California is four years and one year, respectively.
