Efiling an extension that I am not supposed to efile?

I will get a pretty good Federal refund, but I won't have all the documents I need to actually file for a while.

H&R Block at Home says I cannot efile an extension because I recharacterized a Roth IRA. Maybe it sounds cheap, but I hate the idea of paying $5 to mail in a form that should be efiled. What will happen if I efile the extension, then file my return with the Roth recharacterization and get a refund?

I will owe NYS a few dollars, but they will let me efile the extension. Go figure.

should be efiled.

Postage rates must be really high where you live.

recharacterization and get a refund?

Penalties for late filing are based on the tax due. If you get a refund, your penalty for late filing will be zero.
