Estate Tax Return

Based on the Instructions for Form 706, if the estate + taxable gifts is under the exemption limit at time of death, there is no need to file the Estate Tax Return.

If the Gross estate + Taxable gifts is close to Exemption limit, should a return be filed and get a clearance letter from the IRS -- just for peace of mind?

TIA

There's probably no harm in filing the 706, and doing so starts the SOL. However, if you think the clearance letter is automatic, the rules changed in 2021. Now you must pay a $67 fee to receive a closing letter. See

This is probably considered as off topic.. But how do I get a copy of this reply onto my PC? I forgot to click on the Subscribe box before I post. I tried Forward; but that doesn't forward this Reply message. There used to be a link to get "raw message" and I import it to my email client); but now that is grayed out.

TIA

You are using Google Groups so it might not be possible. However, you can use a news-client such Mozilla Thunderbird and configure it to download this entire newsgroup or a handful of messages to start with and from there you can either save the message on to your machine as eml file or you can email the message to your email account.

If you want further info about how to setup Thunderbird then you can post your query on:

Unfortunately, you'll need some news-client on your machine for the above link to work. Thunderbird Newsgroup is not available on Google Groups because Mozilla killed it off to save money!!.

Doesn't copy and paste work?

You can use Thunderbird - I prever X-news which is also free. But you will also need a news server. ISPs used to offer those for no additional charge when you got internet. But that's no longer the case.

Thank you and all others giving suggestions on how to get a copy. I triy to keep the softwares on my PC to a minimum.

In the past, I can save a message by clicking on the 3 verticle dots on the right edge of each message, then click on "show raw message"; and I then save that raw message in eml and import it into my email client. The last time I did this was in 5/2022. Then something changed and that option is now greyed out.

Anyway, I checked the Subscribed button after my original message, and indirectly get a copy of the reply onto my PC.

Can't you just copy/paste?

Highlight the text. Press ctrl/c to copy it into your "clipboaed" Start a new email. Press ctrl/V to paste the clipboard into the main email body

Send it to yourself

I use Windows Live Mail on my Windows-based PC, which works reasonably well for accessing newsgroups like this. If the goal is just to capture the content of the message or thread, you could copy it all to your clipboard and then paste it into a mail message that you send to yourself or paste into a Word document or whatever.

Find the Message-ID of whichever "this reply" you're talking about, go to

, paste it into the box, and click Search. You'll get the article, including all headers.

You can then use the normal methods for saving a Web page, such as Ctrl+P and selecting Print to PDF or similar (if available), or right-clicking and selecting Save Page As.

If you're talking about Ira Smilovitz's article in this thread, the message-ID, including the brackets that the Web page requires, is snipped-for-privacy@googlegroups.com

Thanks, Stan. This is what I am looking for. If I see another post that I want to save, how do I find the Message-ID?
