Experiences with direct deposit of refund

I decided to try direct deposit of my 2007 taxe refund figuring I'd get it a bit quicker. As usual, I was late filing - always get a refund so it doesn't matter. I filed in late August. I checked the "where's my refund" link at the IRS website, it says my refund was mailed Oct. 3rd...

I filled in the spaces on the 1040 with my account and routing number, so how come they've indicated they're mailing it? Did someone just mess up or does "mailing it" not necessarily mean they're mailing it? Or....?

Did you check the box on the 1040 for the type of account - checking or savings?

If there's the slightest problem with the direct deposit, the IRS doesn't bother trying to fix it. They just mail a check instead. There could have been an error in the information you provided, or a glitch at either the IRS or your bank.

The Treasury Department's Financial Management Service (FMS) may have attempted to direct deposit your refund to the financial institution's Routing Transit Number (RTN) and the account number you indicated on your tax return. If the direct deposit did not go through because you entered one or both numbers erroneously, the unsuccessful direct deposit gets returned to FMS and two weeks later a paper refund check is issued. Due to the amount of time that transpired, approximately 5 weeks, between the date you filed and the refund check date, the returned direct deposit scenario seems plausible.

Apparently it wasn't anything that elaborate. I double-checked the copy I made of my return, all the numbers were correct, the checking account box was checked. I called the IRS and they indicated my direct deposit info wasn't even in the system where it should have been for even the attempt to be made to deposit it. The info from your return gets manually entered into the database. Apparently someone was too lazy to input it.
