Form 1099-DIV

Please note that I am not an income tax professional...

I had contacted the creator of an Excel spreadsheet that can be used in filing U.S. income taxes. You can see his site at:

The reason I had contacted him was because I did not understand how to enter data from IRS Form 1099-DIV into his spreadsheets. I asked him where the tab for Form 1099-DIV was.

He contends that the only information that needs to be entered directly from that form goes to Schedule B, Part II. Therefore, no dedicated tab for Form 1099-DIV is needed.

I say that a dedicated tab for Form 1099-DIV is needed because:

  • Box 1a goes into Schedule B, line 5, like he is saying;
  • Boxes 1b and 10 go into Form 1040, boxes 9b and 8b;
  • Box 2a goes into Schedule D, Line 13

Who is right?

you both are.

He is correct in how he states where those numbers end up. You are correct, if I am reading your mind a bit, in that he does not include a

1099-DIV tab to allow you to enter information from a number of 1099-DIVs, as is the case with multiple W-2s in the W-2 tab.
