A friend asked me about investing in gold. He wanted to know when the price of gold is quoted on sites such as finance.yahoo.com, where does that data come from. What type of gold investment does that represent?

Different exchanges have different prices but the differences are usually small and quickly arbitraged away.

Keep in mind that you cannot buy or sell at that price, since dealers all charge a markup.
