Historical Stock prices

I have been asked by a conservator to help with the preparation of

2009 tax return for an elderly gentleman that is 92 years old and residing in a nursing home. The conservator has to sell some of his stocks to provide for nursing home expenses. The taxpayer has dementia and no recollection of when he bought the stock. It must have been purchased gradually during 1970 and 1980. I need to do some average pricing for these periods.

Is there a free website to get the stock prices for the above- mentioned periods for the Rockwell Collins and ArvinMeritor stocks that he owned and were sold in 2009?

Rockwell broke up into Rockwell-Collins (COL) and Rockwell Automation (ROK) on June 15, 2001. Possibly your TP bought Rockwell stock in the

70's or 80's, and then received the Rockwell-Collins stock in the June 2001 stock swap, which was a non-tax event. He may either still own, or have already sold, his Rockwell Automation stock.

What this means is that even once you find out what he might have paid for the Rockwell stock, you will have to look up the details of the 2001 stock swap.

The Historical Prices feature of Yahoo! Finance will give you a chart of prices over a range of dates, and you can download the chart to a spreadsheet.

I don't belive there is a website that will provide the historical prices for Rockwell common for the years in question. You should visit any library that has back issues of either the NY Times or WS Journal on microfiche and look them up. Then you should visit the website for Investor Relations for Rockwell Collins to obtain the spin-off tax basis from the 2001 distribution.

I just learned of this website yesterday and haven't had a chance to fully check it out, but it does have suggestions about retrieving historical prices, as well as info on spinoffs, mergers, etc.
