Easy Delete for Stock Prices

Actually, just adding (re-adding) a security to Quicken's security list is not that difficult. But you probably can't delete the existing security anyway, since you likely still have Quicken transactions for it ... even though the last transaction may have sold all your shares 2 years ago.

Conceptually, I like the idea of being able to check a single box and have Quicken stop downloading prices for securities I once owned but do not currently own. But I think it might be more difficult to implement than it seems.

First of all, that logic would have to be able to cooperate with downloading prices for Watch List securities. The Watch List is Quicken's way to allow you to download the prices of securities you do not own.

And secondly, the method of determining which securities are owned, at the moment a price download is requested, might not be trivial ... it could either cost time to make the determination, or cost complexity if such a status had to be maintained for each security.

I'm not saying it couldn't be done, I just don't know the "cost".

Anyway, you can already prevent the download of prices for selected securities - without deleting the securities - in a couple of ways (albeit none as simple for the user as the check box referred to above).

First, the obvious question: Which version of Quicken?

In Quicken 2007 Basic, I can click Investing | Security List (or just press Ctrl+Y) to see a list of al the securities I've entered into Quicken over the years. At the far right is a column of checkboxes headed "Watch". There are checkmarks in the boxes of a few that I want to get quotes for, even though I don't own them. Otherwise, the box is unchecked.

And then there is One Step Update Settings. Clicking "Update Now" opens the OSU Settings window; in the upper right is the link to "Select quotes". Clicking this gets me a list where I can check or uncheck all the stocks in my list. You might want to "Clear All" and start over.

At least one of these methods should do what you want.

Quicken 2006 Deluxe. The suggestions would simplify the process of manually telling Quicken which stocks to get a quote for but doesn't do what I was asking. Understand it can't be done and appreciate the help on the best way to do this manually. Will just go ahead and let it grind away on the download- I was also hoping that a smaller download might have a higher success rate for downloading! Thanks again.

1. Under Investing select the "Security List"
2. Highlight a stock that you do not own anymore.
3. Select Edit
4. Delete the symbol and it will no longer update. - or - to keep the symbol for reference cut it and paste it into the "other info" page under "comments"
5. Click OK twice.
6. Then you will be asked if you want to delete the existing price history.

One can always rebuild the price history if needed later.
