How to get est tax payment info from IRS?

Feb 23, 2016 3 Replies

Hi, I paid my 4th qtr 2015 estimated taxes for federal and NY on

12/31/2015. I always have the Post Office agent hand postmark both letters, so I know the proper postmark is there.

Problem is NY is saying they got it on 1/13/2016. I can see that in the online system NY has and I can deal with them regarding that.

The thing is, I want to know what date the IRS thinks I made that federal

2015 4th qtr estimated payment. Does anyone know how I would go about finding that out? Just call one of the 800 #'s?

Regards, PJ

Why do you care? As long as it was before 1/15/16 it was timely. If it was late, you'll get a notice from the IRS and you can contest it then.

It does matter for state because that determines which year I claim the payment. I want to know why the postmark was not honored for NY. And, did federal also have this problem.

If you dated the check in December and have proof of mailing (certified mail receipt, etc.) in December, then you can claim the state payment as being made in December for federal itemized deduction purposes, regardless of what NY says. The key is that you may need proof of mailing if the IRS questions you.
