Incorporating Sales Commission On Mixed Sale

Mar 31, 2012 1 Replies

How do I incorporate the sales commission for a sale of shares of the same company purchased at various dates that are a mixture of long and short term?

Example: I sell 300 shares of ABC on 10/10/2011 for $1000 purchased in three lots, 100 on 1/1/2001 for $100, 100 on 2/2/2002 for $200, and 100 on

2/2/2011 for $300. The sales commission was $10. This example has two long term and one short term. The broker reports this as a sale of 300 shares with net proceeds of $990.

In the past I never mixed long and short term so I could lump them and list the purchase date as "various." In this example, I cannot.

Thanks, Gary

Split the proceeds pro-rata. $660 for the 200 LT shares and $330 for the 100 ST shared.
