interest on loan for summer house or rental property

Nov 02, 2012 2 Replies

My wife raised the question if the interest on a mortgage for a summer house or for a rental property is tax deductible. I don't know since I have neither. Any idea???

===================Short answer: Primary residence plus ONE other (Schedule A). Rental properties go on Schedule E.

Longer answers reserve the right to discuss exceptions....

While tax planning is extremely important, one should never make an investment just because of tax considerations. That is not an answer to your question, but it is ammunition in case your wife wants to buy a summer home or rental property. ;)
