Late IRA Contributiuon

I've been asked whether someone can make a timely IRA contribution after he has already filed his tax return. I've looked around and it appears that it can be done for a Roth IRA - in that case the return doesn't need to be amended.

But I was unable to find any information on whether this can be done for a traditional IRA. I am assuming that if it is possible, that the

1040 would have to be amended.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for any insight you can give.

Contributions to an IRA can be made up until the due date, not including extensions, for filing the return. This is usually April 15. However, with the IRS delaying all due dates to July 15 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an IRA contribution can still be made for 2019. If the contribution is deductible, you should file a superseding return before July 15. if the contribution is non-deductible, you may need to file Form 8606. This form can be filed independently of the tax return.
