My favorite of all time, I think, was the Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1983 (TEFRA), which followed hard on the heels of the Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981 (ERTA). Others with long memories may recall that ERTA introduced the Accelerated Cost Recovery System (ACRS), resulting in substantial tax reductions for business. TEFRA replaced ACRS with Modified ACRS (MACRS), which pulled back part of the ACRS tax cut by lengthening the recovery periods. So the TEFRA name was a carefully crafted euphemism for a tax increase.
