Med deductions for a dependent

My 90 y.o. MIL has been our IRS dependent for over ten years. In '10 she has cost us an appreciable amount in medical services. Over and above all reimbursements from insurance and Medicare. Can I add her costs to our medical expenses and claim a Form A deduction if over the standard limit. I know I can do this with a child dependent, but can I do it with an adult dependent?

Yes.

Allowed, unreimbursed medical expenses that you paid for you, your spouse and your medical dependents may be claimed on Schedule A line 1, but not before mid- to late- February.

To the OP - keep in mind, from this number (the unreimbursed medical) you then deduct 7.5% of your AGI. This may not leave much, if anything to deduct if you itemize. BTW - for 2010, your standard deduction (for married filing joint) is $11,400. Joe
