Claims for dependency

I believe that even if a baby is born on the last day of the year, you can claim it as a dependent for that entire year. But how does it work at the other end?

My MIL has been our dependent for over 10 years. She died last week at

  1. Can I claim her as a dependent for the entire 2012 tax year or just the month of Jan?

:Your dependent mother died on January 15. She met the tests to be your qualifying relative. The other tests to claim an exemption for a dependent were also met. You can claim an exemption for her on your return. I am sorry for your loss. I am closer to my MIL than my own mother.
