Medical expenses invoiced and paid in 2012 but services rendered in 2011, in which tax year can the deduction be taken provided you qualify in all other medical perameters?

2012... the year paid.

2012 regardless of in which prior year the medical expense occurred.
It gets complicated when you pay in 2011 and the medical procedure happens in 2012 or 2013. I think it this would case it would be a 2011 deduction, but am not sure.
