Preparation of state returns

I am curious as to whether any of you "chain" preparers out there are willing to prepare a state return ONLY, and do so at a reasonable cost? For example, assume that I have prepared the client's federal return, but have elected not to do the state (because I lack local knowledge). Would you be willing to prepare the state return only? I would consider a reasonable cost for this to be under $100 (assuming a return of moderate complexity). MTW

At the two block districts in which I have worked, we would input the data for a complete Federal return, followed by the state(s). Computer then generates a bill based on the forms entered and their complexity. The result is the same as a cold walk-in.

chain, what do you mean?

at our firm we will prepare a state return based on a client's self prepared or other paid prepared federal return, as well as preparing partial returns, i.e. doing a schedule D or E only. BUT, we also have it stipulated in the engagement letter (note to others on the NG you DO have an engaement letter for each return you prepare, right?) specifiying that we will only vouch for or defend from audit the portion(s) of the return we prepared and not the return in toto.. If you're specifically asking if I'll do one for you that you send me, NO, I've got enough work already. If you ain't in to see us by 4-1 this year you're getting extended! Dave

Thanks, that was exactly the information I was looking for (and the result that I more/less expected). MTW
