RMD and defined pension plans

Doing my f-i-l taxes for him He is 85 and income is from his defined benefit pension from his time at KMart. Turbo tax keeps asking me about Required Minimum Disbursement and there is nothing on the 1099-R discussing that. Is this a problem with this kind of pension or this kind of tax prep software?

It's just some confusing wording in TurboTax. Technically the normal payments from a pension plan are an RMD. Just answer that all of the distribution was an RMD.

By the way, there is never anything on a 1099-R regarding RMDs, even for IRAs where the RMD is not automatic and the account owner is responsible for making sure that the RMD is taken each year.

Same age and same deal with 1099-R for pension and I do my own using TT. Never had the problem you describe. On line 7 are you showing the first code as 7 and the second code as blank and the IRA/Simple code also as blank?
