Software Consultant Sole Member LLC in Williamson County TN: Licenses and Taxes

I am a software developer / IT consultant trying to establish my own software consulting business.

I have established a sole member LLC on the TN secretary of state website and registered the LLC with Williamson County register of deeds. I have given my home address as LLC address. I have also obtained an EIN from IRS.

1) Do I need to get any business licenses from the city and / or county?

2) What state taxes do I have to pay?

3) What are the various tax filings that I have to do?

4) Are there any filings with city and / or county?

I have spent an entire day calling different offices of State, City and County and never got a consistent answer from any of them. In-fact when I call again I get a different answer from each office.

Any help is appreciated!

Just think of the improvement or pitching of your mousetrap you could have done with that day, except for a couple of hours with a lawyer and an accountant. Do yourself a huge favor and hire some help for these really important startup issues.

You may need to get a business license from your city. You also need a business license for each city in which you do business. Not all software consultants get the city business license, but they should.

Select your state, county, and city. The page then tells you which licenses you may need at each level.

If you meet clients at your home you might need stuff like building permits. If you operate your LLC under a name different from the name of the LLC, then you need a fictitious business license from the county.

TN state taxes on your individual income, the annual registration TN LLC fee. There is no direct tax on the LLC itself (only CA has that). The income from the LLC just flows onto your individual tax return.

There might be city and county tax.

The website above is the best resource. You can search on the internet for other sources.

Still consider seeing a lawyer, especially if there are two or more members in your LLC.
