student loan interest deduction

I am the co-borrower along with my daughter on student loans used to pay for her college education. She was my dependent at the time the loans were taken out. I am now paying the loans back as she is not yet financially able to. Am I entitled to the deduction?

Thanks, Brian Devlin

Yes, Brian, so long as she is your dependent, or _was_ your dependent at the time you took out the loan. (As you note, you were the co-borrower, that seems a settled matter.)

IRS Pub 17 has an excellent discussion with charts which defines the income limits and maximum deductions which apply (and it can be found on pages 133-134). This should be accessible at

and then choose Publications, and select the HTML option for reading on line.
