My wife has a student loan of about 2k - she got it when they first came out. She goy her degree - but has never had a job of sufficient salary to pay back any of the loan. She has received an inheritance. Will she now have to pay back the loan because she has got this extra money - but still no earned income.

Not because she has the capital, but if the interest on the money (or investments) is such that she is over the threshold (I think 15k) for earnings then she will have to start repaying the loan. I think.
